One of the very first questions grieving families ask after losing a beloved companion is:
"How long do I have before I need to take my pet to a crematory?"
The answer is reassuring.
In most situations, you do not have to rush.
Taking a few minutes, a few hours, or even some quiet time with your companion before making arrangements is completely understandable and often an important part of the grieving process.
At Soothing Streams Pet Services, we encourage families to spend the time they need saying goodbye before transportation arrangements are made.
How Long Do I Have?
In most cases, if your companion is gently wrapped in a towel or blanket and kept indoors in a cool, dry, air-conditioned environment, families generally have approximately 24–36 hours to make transportation arrangements with their veterinarian or chosen pet aftercare provider.
If your home is warm, humid, not air-conditioned, or your companion cannot be kept cool, arrangements should be made much sooner.
If transportation will be delayed beyond 24–36 hours, refrigeration (not freezing) is generally recommended whenever possible.
If refrigeration isn't practical, simply contact your veterinarian or Soothing Streams Pet Services. We'll gladly walk you through the best course of action based on your individual circumstances.
What Should I Do Immediately After My Pet Passes Away?
Whether your companion was a:
-
Hamster
-
Rat
-
Bird
-
Reptile
-
Or another beloved companion animal...
…the first steps are essentially the same.
We recommend gently wrapping or swaddling your companion in a clean towel, blanket, or sheet.
This simple act serves several important purposes.
It:
-
Provides dignity and respect.
-
Makes it easier to safely hold and transport your companion.
-
Protects your furniture, flooring, vehicle, or bedding.
-
Helps absorb any natural fluids that may be released after passing.
Why Should I Wrap My Pet?
This is something many families don't think about until afterward.
After death, muscles naturally relax.
Because of this, many pets—regardless of their size or species—may naturally release:
-
Urine
-
Stool
-
Other bodily fluids
This is completely normal.
It does not mean your companion suffered.
It does not mean something went wrong.
It is simply a natural part of the body's changes after death.
Wrapping your companion in a towel or blanket helps provide protection should this occur and allows you to continue holding and honoring your pet with confidence and dignity.
Where Should I Keep My Pet?
The ideal location is somewhere that is:
-
Cool
-
Dry
-
Quiet
-
Out of direct sunlight
Good locations include:
-
An air-conditioned room
-
A basement
-
A climate-controlled room
-
Another cool indoor location
Avoid:
-
Direct sunlight
-
Hot garages during summer
-
Vehicles
-
Outdoor areas
-
Warm porches or patios
Heat accelerates natural changes after death.
The cooler your companion remains, the better.
Should I Refrigerate My Pet?
If transportation will occur within the next several hours—or even within approximately 24–36 hours in a cool, climate-controlled home—refrigeration is often unnecessary.
However, if you anticipate a longer delay, refrigeration is generally the best option.
Do not freeze your companion unless absolutely necessary.
Freezing can make transportation more difficult and may affect certain memorial keepsakes such as:
-
Paw prints
-
Nose prints
-
Fur keepsakes
-
Feather preservation
If you're unsure what to do, simply call Soothing Streams Pet Services and we'll gladly guide you.
Does the Size of My Pet Matter?
Larger pets naturally retain body heat longer than smaller pets.
However, the recommendations remain essentially the same regardless of whether your companion was:
-
A Great Dane
-
A Chihuahua
-
A Rabbit
-
A Guinea Pig
-
A Hamster
-
A Bird
-
A Reptile
-
Or any other companion animal.
Keep your companion:
-
Wrapped
-
Cool
-
Dry
-
Protected
Then contact your preferred pet aftercare provider.
Can I Spend Time Saying Goodbye?
Absolutely.
Many families choose to:
-
Hold their companion one last time.
-
Allow children to say goodbye.
-
Pray together.
-
Share stories.
-
Take a final photograph.
-
Clip a lock of fur or save a favorite feather.
-
Simply sit quietly together.
These moments often become some of the most meaningful memories families carry with them.
There is no "right" amount of time.
The important thing is allowing yourself the opportunity to say goodbye while making transportation arrangements within a reasonable timeframe.
Do I Have to Use My Veterinarian's Crematory?
No.
Many pet owners don't realize they have a choice.
Whether your companion passes away:
-
At home
-
At your veterinarian's office
-
At an emergency hospital
-
During hospice care
...you may request the pet aftercare provider you prefer.
Many Metro Atlanta families specifically choose Soothing Streams Pet Services because we offer Cremation by Water, a gentle alternative to traditional flame-based cremation.
What Is Cremation by Water?
Most people assume cremation automatically means fire.
Today, that simply isn't true.
Cremation by Water, also known as Water Cremation or Aquamation, uses:
-
Water
-
Gentle heat
-
Circulation
-
Alkalinity
Together, these elements accelerate the same natural process that occurs after burial.
At Soothing Streams Pet Services, our process uses water heated to approximately 204°F.
Traditional flame cremation can approach approximately 2,000°F.
That means Cremation by Water is performed at roughly one-tenth the temperature of traditional flame cremation, making it a significantly gentler and more natural alternative.
There is:
-
No burning.
-
No flames.
-
No combustion.
Many families tell us that simply knowing this brings them tremendous comfort.

That's understandable.
It's simply what we've all known for generations.
But today...
There is another option.
Water instead of fire.
Approximately 204°F instead of temperatures approaching 2,000°F.
No burning.
About one-tenth the temperature of traditional flame cremation.
